Untitled or Bop!

Brain choreography, memory, data mining, and interaction make up this piece made in collaboration with theater artists Philip Gates and Adam Thompson. Originally conceived as a choreography piece, Untitled quickly expanded to include a single audience member who was given three sets of tasks. Some tasks were mundane, and some were intentionally impossible. All were monitored, scored, and recorded by an EEG headset worn by the participant.

Originally presented as part of MIT’s Hacking Arts Fest 2017, Untitled made use of a custom Max/Msp patch created by Adam Thompson and myself. The participant’s brainwaves were sorted into frequency bands and given parameters for musical timing, creating a personalized and an impossible to recreate piece of music.
